I got a question from someone who watched the What We Eat In A Day As A Vegan Couple video which I just uploaded yesterday…

QUESTION: Do u ever get bloated or gassy from eating too much fibre?

ANSWER: Hmmm… I don’t think I’m eating too much fibre. Having said that, I haven’t keyed in my meals into Cronometer lately so I don’t really know whether there’s too much fibre.

I thought Dr. Will Bulsiewicz who wrote "Fiber Fueled: The Plant-Based Gut Health Program for Losing Weight, Restoring Your Health, and Optimizing Your Microbiome" says that most people are deficient in fibre?

But let’s talk about getting bloated or gassy…

It’s Yes and No for me.

NO - For breakfast, no, I don’t get bloated or gassy from eating my fruits. I think it’s coz I’m eating on an empty stomach.

NO - I hardly get bloated or gassy on cooked food unless it's onion and garlic.

YES - Yes, I get gassy when I eat food with onions and garlic. Both raw & cooked. It makes me fart a lot!

YES - When I combine fruit with cooked food like rice, I feel bloated. So I prefer to eat my fruit on it’s own, like for breakfast and dinner, just all raw fruit.

YES - When I mono-mealed on oranges, I found myself getting bloated. That’s why I stopped monomealing.

YES - When I eat raw cabbage, cauliflower or broccoli. So I eat smaller amounts and I ferment my cabbage into kimchi instead.

Some things to look out for which might cause bloating:
Food combining - certain foods when combined together will cause bloating for me such as nuts & seeds together with fruits. That’s why when I make my green smoothie bowls, I don’t use nut milks as the liquid for the smoothie. I just use water or coconut water.

Or melons with cooked food will cause me bloating too.

Not chewing properly - we should be chewing our food until it becomes liquid/paste. Some people say you should chew your food 25 times before you swallow.

Talking while eating - I know this is hard to avoid, especially when you’re eating with family or friends but it’s best not to talk when eating. When you talk, you may be gulping down air as you eat and that can also cause bloating.
